Good Night, Good Knight

Author: Shelley Moore Thomas
Illustrator: Jennifer Plecas
Awards: None
Grade Level: K-2nd

Summary:

A good knight is on guard duty for the night and hears many roars from baby dragons throughout the nights. He quickly leaves his post to find out what is the matter and then tends to the baby dragons who are simply just getting ready for bed and want water, a bedtime story and song. Because the knight is a good knight, he grants all of the baby dragons with their requests. The last time the dragons call, the knight gets frustrated but realizes they just want a kiss goodnight so he gives each one of them one. He then goes to sleep himself.

Evaluation:

This is a great classroom resource that I would have in my class as a leveled reader and would use in  guided reading groups. The story is very repetitive so it is perfect for the target grade level and it is filled with rich examples of literary devices such as onomatopoeia, alliteration and homophones. Since this book is a leveled reader, it also uses many high frequency words which are useful for formative assessments during class to track students' progress.
