Barefoot: Escape on the Underground Railroad
Author: Pamela Duncan Edwards
Illustrator: Henry Cole
Awards: None
Grade: K-2nd
Summary: A barefoot is running on a pathway trying to flee from the plantation he left behind him. He begins to be chased by the Heavy Boots. The animals along the pathway give signals along the way which are used to symbolize the safety signals that were given to the slaves trying to escape to freedom. The barefoot arrives to a house with a quilt on the outside which signaled that it was a safe house for him that he had been looking for. Once he was welcomed into the house the animals begin to hear another barefoot.
Evaluation: This was an okay book. I think the most notable part was the illustrations which would be a good topic of discussion during an interactive read aloud. I will say this would be a more artistic approach to teaching about the underground railroad because of the metaphors it gives between the different signals that the animals use.
