The Borrowers

Author: Mary Norton
Grade level: 3rd-5th

Summary: Kate is with her aunt Mrs. May crocheting when she loses her needle. Her Aunt replies that the borrowers must have taken it and proceeds to tell the story of when she and her brother were younger and met the borrowers in their house. In order for the borrowers to survive, they have to steal (or as they say borrow) from the human beans or regular sized people. As a young borrower, Arrietty becomes interested in becoming like her dad and borrowing from the human beans; however, it is a dangerous job and can't be caught. While she is roaming in the garden, she meets the boy and begins to tell him everything about their lives. He one day finds them in the clock which should mean danger but to their surprise the boy brings them doll furniture. Arrietty and the boy become friends and she begins to teach him english. Trouble begins to arise when Mrs. Driver hires an exterminator to kill the borrowers. The boy doesn't get to find out what happened to his friends; however, years later when Mrs. May comes back she leaves gifts for the borrowers and they continue to disappear which gives Kate the belief that the borrowers are still alive.

Evaluation: I listened to this book through a read aloud on Youtube. I really enjoyed it because its a childrens book that I have always wanted to read and would be a fun read aloud for my class. I think this would be a book that I keep strictly for fun reading rather than making an activity out of it.
