Last Stop on Market Street
Author: Matt de la Pena
Illustrator: Christian Robinson
Awards: Caldecott, Newbery, Coretta Scott King Award
Grade Level: K-2nd
Summary: After leaving church with his Nana, CJ asks a series of questions about why they have to walk in the rain, ride the bus, why a man can't see and how he wishes he had an ipod. His Nana always has an answer and says that she feels sorry for people who don't get to ride the bus and meet the people their and listen to the beauty of the world. CJ begins to realize what is really beautiful and tells her how he is excited that they came to the Soup Kitchen and she says she is too.
Evaluation: This is a great book about being appreciative and paying attention to beauty in the world. I would love to have students go outside and draw/write about what they see if beautiful around our school. I also love how multicultural this book is because my students will be able to see themselves in the story when we read it.
