Summary: India Opal Bulloni has to move to a trailer park in Florida with her preacher dad. She becomes very lonely but one day at the Winn Dixie supermarket she finds a scruffy dog running around and making a huge disaster which made the store manager very angry. She decides to claim the dog as hers and couldn't think of any other name except for Winn Dixie. Upon returning home with Winn Dixie, her father agrees to tell her ten things about her mom which allows her to have a better connection to her even though she isn't there. Opal meets a many people because of Winn Dixie and she learns that people are just like the Littmus Lozenges because they are sweet with a touch of sadness and to look past what people simply appear to be. When Winn Dixie disappears, Opal remembers the list of ten things that her father said to her about her mom so she makes a list about Winn Dixie to try to find him. She ends up finding him under the bed at Gloria's house hiding from the storm. Opal no longer feels alone anymore because of all the friends she has made through Winn Dixie.

Evaluation: This is a sweet book with a great lesson to not judge people based on their appearances. I would have this in my classroom and encourage students to read it and maybe even do a book club center on it where the students in the group can discuss the different themes.
