Leila in Saffron

Author: Rukbsanna Guidroz
Illustrator: Dinara Mirtalipova
Awards: None
Grade Level: K-3rd

Summary: When Leila goes to her grandmothers house for their weekly family dinner, she sees everyone but doesn't like what she sees about herself. She spends the entire night looking for something that she could possibly like about herself. When it is time to leave, Naani calls her to her room to give her a saffron scarf because she noticed that saffron is a great color on Leila because of her dark eyes. This makes Leila so happy because she looks at herself again and decides that she found something that she likes about herself.

Evaluation: This book was really heartwarming because it discusses the identity struggles that children have, especially when it involves culture. I think this book is a great way to introduce self affirmation and positivity in children. I would use this in my class to have students then create a self portrait and write something that they like about themselves so we could hang it around our classroom.
