Frindle
Author: Andrew Clements
Awards: Texas Blue Bonnet
Grade Level: 2nd-5th
Summary: Nick Allen is beginning his fifth grade year and he is typically known for wasting time at school by asking questions, until he has Mrs. Granger as his language arts teacher. When he tries to ask her if all dictionaries copy each other, she assigned him a research project to teach him to not ask time wasting questions. When she explained to him how words get into the dictionary, he decided to create a new word himself. He decides to call pens frindles and put his new idea to the test by having his friends go to the local store and ask the cashier for a frindle every day so by the end of the week the cashier knew what a frindle was. This took off at school when the entire fifth grade class said frindle instead of cheese during their class picture. Mrs. Granger was fed up with frindle because it became a disruption to class so she made Nick sign a letter but he was not allowed to open it until the time was right. Frindle would soon be forgotten if it weren't for it going to the news and Bud Lawrence creating a pen brand after the name and to avoid any trouble gave Nick royalties which he becomes successful off of 10 years later. He then receives a letter from Mrs. Granger explaining that she was always rooting for his new word and that she teaches her students about frindle becoming a real word in the dictionary from one of her students.
Evaluation: I loved this book as a child so it was fun reading it from a future teachers point of view. I think this would be a fun read aloud for my students and even having students get to create a word that we use in our classroom so only our class knows about our secret word and through the years having a Mrs. Jackson's class dictionary with all the words we've come up with through the years and having students sign the entry in the class dictionary.
