Her Aunt replies that the borrowers must have taken it and proceeds to tell the story of when she and her brother were younger and met the borrowers in their house. In order for the borrowers to survive, they have to steal (or as they say borrow) from the human beans or regular sized people. As a young borrower, Arrietty becomes interested in becoming like her dad and borrowing from the human beans; however, it is a dangerous job and can't be caught. While she is roaming in the garden, she meets the boy and begins to tell him everything about their lives. He one day finds them in the clock which should mean danger but to their surprise the boy brings them doll furniture. Arrietty and the boy become friends and she begins to teach him english. Trouble begins to arise when Mrs. Driver hires an exterminator to kill the borrowers. The boy doesn't get to find out...
