Jack and the Beanstalk

Summary:
     A poor mother sends her son, Jack, to trade in her cow. Jack meets a man with magical beans and trades the cow for them. The next morning a giant beanstalk grows which he climbs and finds a castle occupied by a wealthy boy eating ogre and his wife. After several successful attempts at stealing from the ogre, he gets caught and is chased down the beanstalk by him. Jack calls for his mom who chops down the beanstalk, causing the ogre to fall and break his head. After selling the gold that he had stollen, Jack and his mother become rich and Jack marries a princess.

Evaluation:
     I would use a different retelling of this story because the vocabulary is old and difficult to understand. I would use this tale to encourage kids to take risks in life, followed by a lesson of successful famous people who took risks to get to where they are today. Even though risks can be scary, they sometimes allow you to reap very large benefits.

  1. I would use this retelling because of the vocabulary -- this exposes students to a less modern vocabulary, which helps them understand that language changes.
