Tops and Bottoms

Retold By: Janet Stevens
Illustrator: Janet Stevens
Awards: Caldecott Honor Book
Grade Level: Pre K-2nd

Summary:
Hare used to own a business but lost it in a bet and decides to take advantage of his neighbor Bear, who inherited lots of money and land from his father, but was too lazy to work himself. Hare convinces Bear that he will do all of the work during harvest while Bear sleeps, as long as Hare gets either the top or bottom of the crops. After tricking Bear three times, Bear decides to not do business with Hare anymore and instead decides to work for himself during each harvest.

Evaluation:
This is a beautifully illustrated book that follows the story. When Hare is given the tops of the crops he is illustrated on the top page while Bear is on the bottom, and vice versa. This is a good story to teach kids about trust and hard work. I could also use this during a lesson about gardening because it has key vocabulary related to harvesting crops and has different vegetables that the Hare grows. This is also a genuinely funny book that I enjoyed reading and can't wait to read to my students.
