The Ugly Duckling
Retold By: Jerry Pickney
Illustrator: Jerry Pickney
Awards: Caldecott Honor Book
Grade Level: Pre K- 2nd
Summary:
This is retelling of the story the Ugly Duckling. The story begins with a new mama duck who lays six eggs, with one that is oddly shaped. When this egg hatched an ugly duckling appeared and it seemed that no matter how far he went and no matter who he encountered, everyone made fun of the way that he looked. This made him very sad because he could never blend in with the other animals, until one day he became frozen in the river and had to be rescued. He became stronger than ever before and found a group of swans that welcomed him in like no one had ever before. When he saw his reflection, he was now a beautiful swan.
Evaluation:
This is a beautiful story that can be used to teach students about patience, self confidence and kindness. I would use this in my classroom to teach students about our actions towards others and how we can hurt someone for a long time just by making fun of them for a few minutes. I would want my students to know that so many other animals made fun of the ugly duckling and it took him until he became a swan to be confident in himself.
