Summary:
August Pullman is a 10 year old boy who loves Star Wars was born with many deformities and has had many reconstructive surgeries in an attempt to fix his face. He has never been able to fit in and has become accustomed to people always staring at him. He has a supportive family with his Mom (who homeschools him), Dad and sister Via. Auggie's parents decide that it is time for him to go to a real school to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, where Jack Will, Julian and Charlotte are the first students at the school to meet him. He quickly finds out that Julian is a bully. Luckily he has a few great friends like Summer and Jack Will (most of the time). We also get to read the point of views of other characters and how being close to Auggie has impacted their lives and how our emotions are natural but the way we respond to them is key. This is also emphasized in the english teacher, Mr. Brownes precept to "choose kind". The theme of kindness ultimately encourages the students at Beecher Prep to look at people for who they are on the inside not just the outside. Auggie then wins the Henry Ward Beecher medal that recognizes greatness at the end of the year award ceremony that has everyone cheering for him.

Evaluation:
This was a very heart warming book that I would use in my class. This teaches the readers the value of kindness, even when it causes you to be isolated. I would use this as a read aloud at the beginning of the school year so the students can relate to the nervous feelings that Auggie has in the beginning of the book when he is a new student at Beecher Prep. I would also like to follow the ideas of Mr. Browne's precepts but modifying them to fit to my classroom to encourage good stewardship.
